ZUTSHWA SALT MINE: PROJECT WITH THE POTENTIAL TO BOOST KGALAGADI ECONOMIC STATUS AND TURN ZUTSHWA INTO AN ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE
A project that started in the 90's by a group of German Lutheran Church missionaries who descended on the small settlement of Zutshwa is back on full production having suffered a major collapse in the early 2000s. Zutshwa, a remote village in the Kalahari situated on the edge of a spectacular salt pan in between Hukuntsi and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (via Kaa Gate).
With the Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board - BAMB (BAMB) having partnered with the mine in August 2024, they have guaranteed a 100 % offtake with ramped up production and expansion of the mine. Through the assistance of Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) Zutshwa salt mine has received funding in the past years from the BWgovernment , UNDP Botswana (UNDP), the Southern Africa Development Commission (SADC), and Rural Development Council to boost production margins.
Extensive tests have already established that the salt produced by the mine boasts an impressive purity level of 99.9 percent concluding with an approval for human and livestock consumption.
