ZUTSHWA SALT MINE: PROJECT WITH THE POTENTIAL TO BOOST KGALAGADI ECONOMIC STATUS AND TURN ZUTSHWA INTO AN ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE

 A project that started in the 90's by a group of German Lutheran Church missionaries who descended on the small settlement of Zutshwa is back on full production having suffered a major collapse in the early 2000s. Zutshwa, a remote village in the Kalahari situated on the edge of a spectacular salt pan in between Hukuntsi and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (via Kaa Gate). Under the supervision of Qhaa Qhing Conservation Trust, Zutshwa salt mine is a community beneficiation project mining, processing and packaging salt in the Kgalagadi district. With more than 40 ponds used to produce salt, the mine uses a simple method of harvesting salty water into ponds and allowing it to crystallize before adding iodine to it. This production process has attributed positively to the attractiveness low prices of the 50kg packaged salt and 65kg lick blocks.
